The Setting

Little Harriers is owned and run by Mike and Lucy Verbrugge.
The nursery opened in September 2004 – the same month in which they married!

Both Lucy and Mike remain very hands-on, working in the nursery. Lucy jointly Manages the nursery on a daily basis. They now have their own Little Harrier, Eve! She was born on the 16th June 2008 and joined the Baby Room in October 2008.

Situated on the peaceful side of Dunsfold Park, away from the hustle and bustle of the local businesses, Little Harriers is surrounded by grass and trees, and boasts a large outdoor area.

Here at Little Harriers we incorporate the Montessori philosophy into our curriculum, in which the children are allowed the freedom to discover and learn about the world around them through first-hand experiences and concrete activities.   Montessori globe

Secuirty

Danny - head of secuirty

We boast 24 hour security, seven days a week.  Danny White and his team of Security Guards ensure all cars and passengers have a genuine purpose to be on Dunsfold Park.  Once you have joined Little Harriers, you will be issued with a Car Pass to allow you onto the site without questioning.

At Little Harriers we have strict door security, keeping all doors locked and only letting in people whom we know.  If it is someone who we are unfamiliar with, the Manager or Deputy Manager will speak to the Visitor to identify them.

Little Harriers also had a new electronic door system installed in January 2009. The new door system allows parents to enter the nursery using a personalised key fob. These key fobs are only issued to parents of the nursery and are a far more convenient way of entering the building to drop off and collect the children.

We also invite you to look at our 'WEB CAM'.  Only parents are given the username and password and are free to look at it any time during nursery hours.

Meal Times

We pride ourselves on our food here at Little Harriers; all of our lunches are homemade by Gerry – our chef - who holds the appropriate qualifications. She uses Annabel Karmel's, 'Baby and Toddler Meal Planner' to ensure all the meals are healthy and nutritious for the children in the Baby Room.

For our Little Toddlers, Big Toddlers and the Pre-School, Gerry provides delicious, wholesome meals for the children, similar to that offered at home. Wherever possible, Gerry adapts the menu to compliment the topic of the month; with meals ranging from mild curries to traditional Christmas lunch.

Meal time

During the warmer months, the Pre-school grow and harvest vegetables and herbs from their garden and bring items in for Gerry to use that day. The children also benefit this time of year from outdoor picnics, which are enjoyed by all!

We can discuss any special dietary requirements that you have – Gerry is very accommodating and creative with her cooking.

Settling In

Settling in

Approximately one month before your child is about to join us here at Little Harriers, we will call you to arrange pre-visits.  This is an opportunity for you and your child to meet the staff that will be caring for your child and familiarise yourself with them and the nursery.

On the first visit we will talk about your child’s routines, likes and dislikes and they will have the chance to play with the other children in their group and meet the staff.

From the second visit onwards, we invite you to leave your child with us for anything from 30 minutes to two hours.  Most children have a minimum of three visits.  However, we meet your individual needs and it may be that if your child has not been left before they need a couple more to familiarise themselves.Pre-visits are part of the service here at Little Harriers, and parents are not charged for these.

Staff

We like to think of ourselves as an exceptionally strong team at Little Harriers.  Our staff are either fully qualified, have a wealth of experience (including being Mothers themselves) or are working towards an NVQ in Early Years Care and Education.  They also all hold First Aid Certificates for Babies and Children.

Each age group has a named Group Leader who runs the room – they are supported by two other Nursery Nurses and all three are designated to a set room to ensure continuity of care.

All staff attend Safeguarding Children training and short courses run by Surestart on a regular basis. We have an on-site Qualified Childcare Assessor who supports the staff who are training. The staff also receive regular training from the Manager who designs sessions that she feels are suitable for the staff.
